The Liberation of Rahm Emanuel

It doesn?t sound like Rahm Emanuel misses working in the White House all that much.

?In Washington there?s a partisanship you don?t have here in the city,? the Chicago mayor tells me. ?The country is very angry about the lack of progress in Washington. Individuals in Washington think they?re removed from that anger.?

READ MORE Joe Ricketts?s Retreat From Obama Attack Campaign: Are the Chicago Cubs to Blame?

His analysis as a loyal Democrat: ?Look, a lot of Republicans don?t believe in government as an affirmative force. They don?t believe it can do stuff.?

Emanuel has just passed the one-year mark running America?s third-largest city, and the experience could not be more different than his tenure as a congressman and top aide to Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. He and his team aren?t ?shrinking violets,? he noted, not that anyone would libel Rahm by accusing him of such a thing.

While Congress has basically done squat this year, Emanuel got his aldermen to approve his budget?including painful layoffs, fee hikes, and police-station closures?on a 50-0 vote. Not bad, considering that he inherited a $600 million deficit. And he?s getting good press to boot. ?Lucky for Chicago, this pit bull is on our side,? a Sun-Times editorial declared. The new hizzoner is enjoying a 52 percent approval rating in a Chicago Tribune/WGN poll out this week.

Emanuel ticks off a series of accomplishments, from reforming garbage collection to announcing a new air-cargo facility. But the list obviously remains unfinished. ?I?m trying to get pension reform, I?m not there yet,? the mayor says. There have been stumbles, and the Tribune has noted that ?the self-proclaimed champion of transparency? has proved to be secretive.? Nor is Emanuel, whose words tumble out in rapid-fire bursts, a great orator.

But eloquence matters less at the urban level. Mayors have to deliver services or face eviction. They don?t have the luxury of getting mired in endless ideological battles, or of printing money. They have more power than a typical member of Congress, but it?s a make-the-trains-run-on-time kind of job.

As a big-city leader, Emanuel now feels the sting of Beltway paralysis. He got exercised talking about the Export-Import Bank, which Congress voted to reauthorize this week after a long battle. House Republicans, for instance, were torn between business groups that support the bank and conservative organizations that want it abolished.

?They take something that everybody?s agreed [to] for 60 years and make it a six-month effort to get things financed,? Emanuel says. ?So a tractor made here in Joliet can be exported to South Korea or Colombia. If you open up the markets, it?s kind of nutty not to have the financing to go with it.

?I understand you want to have a big debate about war, which we should have. The country shouldn?t casually go into it. You want to have a big debate about tax policy, you want to have a big debate about not the size of government, what it should do, what it shouldn?t do, and if it?s going to do something, how to do it differently. Those are good debates. Financing exports??

As White House chief of staff for two years, Emanuel was a key player in the president?s unsuccessful efforts to compromise with Republicans on the Hill, only to receive virtually no help on economic stimulus and health care. He defends those efforts, saying Obama ?tried to find common ground? But once you repeatedly get rejected, you?ve got to be ready to go your own way, and the president?s shown that.?

But don?t Democrats bear some responsibility for government gridlock? ?I don?t think anyone is immune from that sense of dysfunction,? says Emanuel, who stays in touch with Obama. ?On the other hand, one party is more responsible.?

His shift in focus from presidents to potholes has brought another unmistakable change. I?ve known him a long time, and the hard-charging warrior who once sent an opponent a dead fish seems to have toned it down, at least in public. In fact, Rahm got through the entire interview without dropping a single F-bomb.

The Day Carlos Fuentes Died: Courage to Speak Up | Oaxaca …

The Los Angeles Times pays tribute to the life of Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes who died Tuesday, March 15, 2013 at the age of 83. ?Fuentes was a prolific writer who crafted over 30 novels and non-fiction works. ?He was an outspoken and frequent critic of Mexican politics and government. ?As the story goes, he told Mexican President Felipe Calderon that the war on drugs would not end until the U.S. acknowledged its part in illicit drug trafficking.

The generation of rebellious, educated Mexican intellectuals who command respect worldwide for their authority, integrity, and pointed commentary are aging. ?Fuentes was part of the Latin American 1960?s and 1970?s ?El Boom??of literary giants including Gabriel Garcia Marquez and?Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa?who ?poked at the failures of social and political idealism and action through their writings.

?He wrote of a post-revolutionary Mexico, where the revolutionaries had become business entrepreneurs and bourgeoisie,? said Homero Aridjis, a prominent Mexican poet and writer who knew Fuentes for decades. ?Styling himself after Dickens and Balzac, he wrote novels that formed a kind of ?Mexican Comedy,? a deep portrait of Mexican society, economy and politics.?

Fuentes last column for ?the Mexico City paper, Reforma, appeared on Tuesday, the day he died. In this, he posited?why the three candidates for President were taking petty jibes at each other instead of focusing on important issues.

Who is there to step in and carry-on in the great tradition of the Mexican reformists?

Fuentes passing is a reminder about the importance of speaking ?out for justice and to pay due respect to the great talent that Mexico contributes to the world of art, culture and literature.

Fellow blogger Shannon Pixley Sheppard?includes a list of Carlos Fuentes? works below and writes:

It was the California connection that allowed for my introduction to the writings of Fuentes.? The acquaintance came through? The Old Gringo, a fictionalized story of? the disappearance in Mexico, during the Mexican Revolution, of real life writer and US Civil War veteran,?Ambrose Bierce.? Following the Civil War, Bierce wound up in California, where he was a contributor to the literary journal,?The Argonaut, founded and edited by one of my relatives, about whom, Bierce wrote a typically?acerbic epitaph:??Here lies Frank Pixley ? as usual.??So, in my ongoing attempt to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding living and being in Mexico, reading the?The Old Gringo?was a no-brainer.?As?The Guardian?s?obituary of Carlos Fuentes concludes,

Throughout his life, wherever he lived, Mexico was the centre of Fuentes?s artistic preoccupations. In his late 70s, he provided a typically graphic description of the attraction he felt for his own land: ?It?s a very enigmatic country, and that?s a good thing because it keeps us alert, makes us constantly try to decipher the enigma of Mexico, the mystery of Mexico, to understand a country that is very, very baroque, very complicated and full of surprises.?

Carlos Fuentes is not uncontroversial, but you should see for yourself.? If you are not familiar with his writings, you might want to visit your local library and checkout a book or two.? For those in Oaxaca, the?Oaxaca Lending Library?has the following titles:

Moms Home Decorating: The Best DIY Websites Out There

When I?typed in the?search term ‘Do it yourself?websites for beginners’,?Auto-Complete came up with ‘DIY websites for girls’. They probably didn’t mean anything by it, but the fact that someone thought we needed ‘special help’ just reinforces the stereotype that we’re totally clueless on how to do anything for ourselves around the house. Sorry, guys, that’s not always true.? I know women who can do most any home-repair job you can think of and men who, for safety reasons, should never be?left alone with power tools. Or glue, for that matter.? Oh, well. I *did* manage to find a few instructional sites with projects even us ‘mechanically-declined’ girls can handle.
Instructables.com is a multi-purpose project site run by various ‘professionals’ with a sense of humor. New users are greeted by a yellow robot that looks like a kid’s Halloween costume, and the front page features a VCR that was made into a toaster! The best part about this site is that the projects on the site are submitted by users like yourself and have a very wide range. If you don’t want to make a bookshelf that looks like a rocket, you can make a metal lamp. If you don’t want to do that, you can make chocolate-peanut butter bars that would make Reese’s jealous. Users can upload videos, photos, written instructions or all of the above. There are forums and blog-like comments that allow you to interact with other users. The basic membership is free, but you can buy a monthly subscription for extra ‘perks’. If nothing else, you’ll get a good laugh.
FamilyHandyman.com also features DIY repair and home improvement instructions and project ideas, but takes a more serious tone. That doesn’t mean that the projects won’t be fun, though. Some of them-such as an outdoor stone water fountain-look like something you’d see in a fancy restaurant but can be done and maintained at home. The site also has several tip ‘collections’ that give instructions on projects such as quieting a noisy air conditioner and repairing a damaged carpet. There are forums where you can interact with other users, as well as blogs giving advice and reviews of home improvement products. You can order a subscription to their magazine if you’d rather than a ‘hard copy’, but the website is very useful on its own.
Based on the television network of the same name, the DIY Network site offers instructional videos and articles from a variety of experts, several of whom are women. Some of the shows-online and on television-are about undoing damage someone else may have done (I Hate My Kitchen) while others are about transforming your space into something fun (Man Caves). For those of us who remember the early 1990s (and others who would like to forget), there’s The Vanilla Ice Project. At least this time he’s not threatening to put the other hosts in the trash. Bronson Pinchot of Perfect Strangers and First Wives’ Club fame also has a show on this network.
Now you have a few ideas of where to look next time you want instructions on home improvement or repair projects. Good luck!

JC Penney slumps after posting sales drop

JC Penney is reporting its worst percentage drop in 24 years, with CNBC’s Brian Sullivan and Amanda Drury. Jan Rogers Kniffen, J. Rogers Kniffen Worldwide founder, discusses re-invigorating the customer to turn the stock around.

By Roland Jones

Shares of retailer J.C. Penney (JCP) are down 18 percent to $27 Wednesday, one day after the department store owner scrapped its dividend and showed its effort to remake itself as an affordable fashion-oriented retail chain took a much bigger-than-expected toll on sales in the first quarter.

The retailer?s shares suffered their steepest decline since the 1987 stock market crash.

J.P. Morgan, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs have all lowered their price targets on J.C. Penney, which is in the process of a multi-year turnaround, revamping everything from its pricing strategy to remodeling its stores.

The retailer said sales at stores open at least a year fell 18.9 percent in the first quarter, and reported a loss, missing Wall Street estimates on both counts by a wide margin.

In February, the retailer began to eliminate hundreds of sales events in favor of “everyday low” prices on most items, a radical departure that analysts predicted would confuse or alienate its customers.

The next phase of the transformation will come to shoppers in August when the first of the 100 boutiques each store will house are unveiled. At Tuesday’s analyst meeting, Penney announced deals with designers like Vivienne Tam, Betsey Johnson and Michael Graves.

Kim ‘almost embarrassed’ about televised wedding to Kris Humphries

Kim Kardashian has revealed that she is “almost embarrassed” about her televised wedding to Kris Humphries, who she filed for divorce from just 72 days after tying the knot.

The ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ star’s lavish wedding to NBA star Humphries was broadcast in a two-episode special last August and she admitted that she now feels more “guarded” after filing for the divorce from the basketball player.

“My heart’s a little more guarded. I showed so much of myself in the past,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling E! News.

“You almost get embarrassed showing this big wedding, which I would have had cameras or not. So I think you want to just guard yourself,” she said.

However, Kardashian insisted that her relationship with new boyfriend Kanye West will be a part of the next series of ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’, though she has vowed his appearances won’t be at the forefront of the show.

“I want to show my life. I’m not going to be taking a bubble bath and drinking champagne or on a sex swing [on camera] like Khloe and Lamar do. It’s not going to be like that.

“If we are having dinner and he does show up, I’m sure we’re not going to go, ‘Stop the cameras!’” she added. (ANI)

Travel Russia

Traveling a country so big and so diverse as Russia can be quite a task. So many climatic zones, so many different cities and cultures… It is highly advisable to seek advice from a travel professional who would tell you how and where to go with minimal cost.

Russia is a country with ancient history and tremendously rich culture. Some of its architectural, historical and cultural monuments are enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the historic center of St. Petersburg, the Moscow Kremlin, Red Square, palaces and park complexes, the historical monuments of Novgorod, the historical and cultural complex of Solovki, Trinity-Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad, the white stone monuments of ancient Vladimir-Suzdal and the cities of the ‘Golden Ring of Russia’, and the Kizhi State Historical-Architectural and Ethnographic Museum Reserve.

If you have a look at the Russian Federation, which occupies a sixth part of the earth, it is easy to notice that its sights are so diverse that they go beyond our imagination and resemble no other countries. The people, who have seen a lot and have been to many places, will certainly confirm that it is next to impossible to see all the sights Russia, so great is their number.

The territory of Russia admits more than 100 nature reserves and national parks, the great rivers, like the Volga, the Lena, the Amur, the largest and deepest lake Baikal, the alpine peaks of the Caucasus and the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts, the volcanoes and geysers of Kamchatka. The resorts on the Black Sea, the Kremlin, Red Square, the mausoleum of Vladimir Lenin, the Armory, St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Tretyakov Gallery, Borodino Panorama, and Andrei Rublev museum are perhaps the most attractive places in the eyes of tourists.

He, who has at least once been to Russia, will never forget the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress, the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, the unique museum called the Museum of Curiosities, and unsurpassed palace-park ensembles of Peterhof, Pavlovsk, and Pushkin. Russia is also famous for its ancient towns and the cities of the famous ‘Golden Ring’. They include Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Pereslavl, Vladimir, Rostov, Suzdal, and Sergiev Posad.

The sights that have always been popular among international guests include the Historical and Architectural Museum in Smolensk, the Kremlin and the palace of Ivan the Terrible in Vologda, the Kizhi Museum of Wooden Architecture.

Moscow is the capital of the country and its largest city, but the heart of Russia is truly St. Petersburg. In Moscow, one will find unique attractions, as the Triumphal Arch on Kutuzov Avenue, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Pushkin Museum, Epiphany Cathedral and others.

St. Petersburg is often called Venice of the North due to its tremendous historical and architectural heritage. Its Kazan Cathedral, Isaac Cathedral, the Cathedral of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, Alexander Nevsky Lavra are unique architectural monuments and places of worship. The city’s attractions include the Palace Square with the Winter Palace and the Alexander Column, the Admiralty, Smolny Palace, and the Summer Garden. Tourists often walk along Nevsky Prospect, Kazan Cathedral Street, and Architect Rossi Street. Many tours lead to Ostrovsky Square, the Russian National Library, Arts Square with the building of the Russian Museum, the St. Petersburg Academic Theater of Drama, Summer Gardens, the Field of Mars, and the Engineers’ Castle.

The city’s monuments of Classicism and Empire include the Academy of Fine Arts, Admiralty, the Mountain Institute, Narva Gate. St. Petersburg’s famous bridges are true works of art and samples of engineering excellence. To commemorate the victims of the siege of Leningrad during World War II, the architectural memorial at Piskarevsky cemetery was created in the 1960-s. The suburbs of St. Petersburg are famous for Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo, Pavlovsk, and unique palaces and park ensembles of the 18th-19th centuries.

How to Buy a Really Good Chicken ? Making A Home And Family

Here are my tips on buying a great-tasting and ethically raised chicken so that you can nourish your family without the additives or the guilt.

{Photo Credit}

Best chicken option:

Buy from the farmer!?

You can ask the farmer whether the chicken is pasture raised, eats organic or conventional grain, has access to sunshine and grass, is free-range and how free that actually is, if they treat their chickens with any antibiotics, and how they were butchered.? You can find a local option for the things that matter to you most.

Pastured poultry.

Joel Salatin-like pastured poultry is raised outdoors, eating fresh grass, supplemented with grain, probiotics, kelp, vitamins, and raised in fresh air and sunshine.? The green material that pastured poultry eats gives them a high amount of vitamins and minerals, low levels of saturated fats, and free of medications because they are eating how they were intended. This creates birds that are happy, healthy, and nourishing chicken for your table.

Next best chicken option:

USDA Organic.

When you purchase an organic chicken, there are guidelines that each of those birds must meet.

  • The chicks must be raised organically no later than 2 days from hatching.
  • The chickens must eat organic feed all of their life.? Organic feed contains no antibiotics, GMO grains, animal by-products, or chemicals.
  • The chickens receive no drugs, antibiotics, or hormones.
  • The chickens must have outdoor access.

Good options to look for.

No antibiotics. This doesn?t mean a chicken is raised organically, but it wasn?t given any medicated feed with antibiotics in it.

Certified humane. This means that the chicken meets the requirements for the Humane Farm Animal Care seal so they have access to clean water, no antibiotics, and not raised in caged confinement.

Air chilled. Air chilled birds aren?t chilled in water and absorbing too much of it.? Air chilled birds can be tastier and crispier when prepared.

Don?t fall for these!

100% Natural.? This term is not regulated AT ALL.? It doesn?t mean a thing!

Free-range. This is also unregulated, so unless you are talking to the farmer and visiting their farm, you won?t really know how free they are.? This term just means they have access to the outdoors, but not how much.

Hormone-free. All chickens are hormone-free by Federal regulations, even conventional chickens.
